Two times two has become five, he said with some concern.

Really? When did that happen?

\n

Yesterday afternoon it began, and by night was fully evident.
\nWith growing alarm he noted, now two times three is unpredictable.
\nPerhaps the whole two-times system has become infected
\nand may fail.

\n

The family rallied round, faces grave,
\nhoping for the best, but fearing the worst:
\nBecause twice-two had slipped, now two times three, four, and five
\nwere endangered, even seven and beyond!
\nWhat caused it? A hitherto unknown flaw in two’s basic structure?
\nWas it contagious? Maliciously sent? An unsuspected accident?
\nWhere would it stop?
\nWould all be lost?

\n

It seemed an unquellable collapse, colossal in damage.
\nWas there no answer, no mathematical
\nrepair, somewhere, anywhere? A wizard
\nwho could (at unfathomable cost) somehow wrench those ailing twos
\nback into their accustomed spots, and anchor them securely?
\nOh, did such a one exist?

\n

And then, spoke a child:
\nTWO TIMES TWO EQUALS FOUR. IT NEVER WAS FIVE.

And suddenly, anxious chaos cleared as darkened sky lit by sudden ray.
\nTwo times two equals four?
\nTwo times two equals four.
\nTWO TIMES TWO EQUALS FOUR!

\n

No unpredicatability, no infection, no colossal failure.
\nJust reliable truth.

\n
